Body Mass Index
Extra pounds can affect the body positively or negatively depending on if you fall in a healthy weight range or not. You might have heard about BMI before, which stands for Body Mass Index. This is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by their height. The number will tell you the amount of fat you have on your body. The measurements fall like this:
- Under 18.5: Underweight
- Between 18.5-24.9: Recommended weight for your height
- Between 25-29.9: Overweight category
- BMI of 30 or Higher: Obese category. You may need to change your habits to avoid chronic conditions and stay healthy.
The CDC provides an adult BMI calculator here. Your number doesn’t always indicate health, but it can help you see if you need to work to be healthier.
Weighing In On Your Health
Anyone wanting effective weight loss must realize that the process comes gradually and with steady work. Those who try to do crash diets will wind up being disappointed and back where they started before too long. Improving your health is highly important for lowering your risk of many chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Here are some examples of benefits for different conditions:
- Stroke – A healthier BMI will lower your risk for ever having a stroke. If you’ve already had one, it will reduce your risk for another. Even shaving off 5-10% of the pounds from your frame will lower your blood pressure and stroke risk significantly, as excess weight strains the circulatory system.
- High Blood Pressure – A high BMI increases pressure on the heart and blood vessels and can cause those vessels to become increasingly narrow. They’ll work harder with less efficiency. This could lead to atherosclerosis or heart attack, which you don’t want. Losing just 5-10 pounds can prevent or help manage high blood pressure in patients.
- Type 2 Diabetes – In many cases, type 2 diabetes comes directly from your nutrition and weight. Type 2 can be delayed and prevented by taking care of your health. The best way to prevent type 2 diabetes? Lose the extra pounds you’re carrying around with a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity.
A lower BMI helps lower your changes for these chronic conditions and more. No matter how much you lose, even just a few pounds will put you in the right direction to a healthier life. Your blood sugar levels, circulation, blood pressure, cholesterol, mood, energy and more can all improve, so it’s worth the time and the effort to make a few changes. Going at it alone can be difficult though, which is why we have nutritional assessments and medical weight loss treatments to help our patients achieve success.
Nutritional Assessments
Dietary issues can keep you fatigued, irritable and depressed. They can also lead to aches and pains, an impaired immune system, obesity and more. It is very frustrating to continually gain weight (or be unable to lose weight) due to dietary issues. You will get discouraged easily and increase your risk for many illnesses and health problems. Our nutritional assessments will offer complete blood testing to identify nutritional deficiencies you could have such as iron, vitamin B12, calcium, etc. We will also be able to get an accurate picture of the fat deposits in your body and help with a food diary to track your nutrition. Receiving a professional assessment will ensure that your goals are taken into account. It will help you successfully work towards losing weight, increasing muscle and being healthier overall.
