Avoid Overuse Injuries with These Smart Strategies
August 17, 2023If you’re one of the millions of people suffering from back pain due to herniated and bulging discs, explore these effective solutions to provide some much needed relief. Take the necessary steps towards a healthier and happier life with this guide to combat herniated and bulging discs pain so that you can get back on your feet.
What is a Herniated Disc?
The bones (vertebrae) that form the spine in the back are cushioned by discs. These discs are round, like small pillows, with a tough, outer layer (annulus) that surrounds the nucleus. Located between each of the vertebrae in the spinal column, discs act as shock absorbers for the spinal bones.
The American Association of Neurological Surgeons explains a herniated disc (also called bulged, slipped or ruptured) is a fragment of the disc nucleus that is pushed out of the annulus, into the spinal canal through a tear or rupture in the annulus. Discs that become herniated usually are in an early stage of degeneration. The spinal canal has limited space, which is inadequate for the spinal nerve and the displaced herniated disc fragment. Due to this displacement, the disc presses on spinal nerves, often producing pain, which may be severe.
Herniated discs can occur in any part of the spine. Herniated discs are more common in the lower back (lumbar spine), but also occur in the neck (cervical spine). The area in which pain is experienced depends on what part of the spine is affected.
Symptoms
In most cases, low back pain is the first symptom of a herniated disk. This pain may last for a few days, then improve. Other symptoms may include:
- Sciatica. This is a sharp, often shooting pain that extends from the buttock down the back of one leg. It is caused by pressure on the spinal nerve.
- Numbness or a tingling sensation in the leg and/or foot
- Weakness in the leg and/or foot
- Loss of bladder or bowel control. This is extremely rare and may indicate a more serious problem called cauda equina syndrome. This condition is caused by the spinal nerve roots being compressed. It requires immediate medical attention.
Common Causes & Risks
Some people are born with disc deformities and herniation, while others stumble upon the problem. Nearly any form of damage to the spine could rupture or tear a spinal disc. A few of the most common causes include:
- Sudden trauma to the spine, such as a car accident
- Overwhelming strain due to heavy lifting
- A simple sneeze that puts unexpected force on the spine
- Repetitive activities and actions that involve the back or neck
- Wear and tear that comes with age
- Sitting for too long with poor posture
There are numerous risk factors due to herniated disc issues. While some simply can’t be changed, others are lifestyle choices. Spinal damage risks factors include:
- Growing older, due to the natural degeneration of the discs
- Jobs that involve sitting for long periods of time or heavy lifting
- Staying sedentary and allowing your back muscles to lose strength
- Gaining excess weight, which strains the spine further
- Being male
- Smoking cigarettes
- Eating a poor diet that doesn’t provide the nutrients required for joint and disc health
