Electrical Stimulation Therapy Combats Your Migraine Pain
March 17, 2017Get the Sugar Facts – It May Be Sabotaging Your Health and Energy Levels
March 28, 2017Did you know that back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work according to the American Chiropractic Association? The ACA estimates that at least 80% of people will suffer from some sort of back pain during their lives, and for some, that pain can be severe and long lasting without treatment. At Texas Spine and Sports Therapy Center, we know that your body has the power to heal itself and spinal adjustments with gentle chiropractic care unlock its ability to do so. Your spine houses powerful networks of nerves employed by your central nervous system to help manage and serve all of your bodily systems. When those spinal nerves are compressed from spinal misalignments, your nervous system is unable to communicate appropriately to the areas of your body that need that information. Spinal adjustments help free those compressed signals, empowering your body with the information and power it needs to heal and function optimally.
Why Back Pain Occurs
Back pain can occur from overuse of muscles, strains, sprains, sports injuries, and even from simply picking up something off the ground and turning wrong. In many cases, a subtle movement can cause injury to or decompress your spine without much effort. Back pain can also be caused by degenerative conditions such as arthritis or reasons such as obesity, posture or stress. The causes can be endless, and that’s why it’s so important to see a specialist so the cause can be detected and proper treatment performed.
Treatments for Back Pain
We believe in finding the root cause of your pain before we dive into treatment. We will assess your medical history and use state-of-the-art testing to examine your muscles, nerves and the area of pain to determine the exact cause. We have many therapies and methods we can use to treat chronic pain and want you to be able to have the most effective and powerful therapy we can provide. Our most common method is spinal alignment therapy, but we also provide services such as electrical stimulation, braces and support appliances to reduce pressure on discs, steroid shots to reduce pain and chiropractic care.
Active Release Technique (ART):
This therapy focuses on injuries to the tendons, muscles, fascia, and soft-tissue nerves with damage from repetitive motion and injuries. We most often see injuries from overuse, where symptoms such as scarring, numbness, tingling, aching, and burning can occur. You may not even realize you have overused a muscle until the pain has set in. You may experience muscle fatigue as muscles become shorter and weaker, tendonitis sets in and you experience nerve problems. ART therapy is used to target abnormal tissues and treat them through direct tension and movement of the body (manipulation of the muscles and tissues) to break down scar tissue. The Active Release Technique literally is designed to actively release tension in the muscles, which usually is causing your symptoms and pain. Plus, it’s not painful and non-invasive!
Chiropractic Adjustments:
Correct spinal alignment creates a powerful effect on how the body works and functions. If the spine becomes misaligned, discs or nerves may become compressed, causing pain, numbing, tingling, inflammation, and an assortment of issues. It can affect how you walk and what you can do during the day. Through our chiropractic care, Dr. Atencio will apply powerful, focused pressure to specific parts of your back and spine to realign it and relieve tension in areas that have become compressed. He will also work with the spine to correct improper placement of the vertebrae, subluxations and loosen joints that have become frozen. Even one change to your spinal alignment can make a world of a difference and our patients can usually feel a change during the actual appointment. Dr. Atencio and his staff have perfected their chiropractic care so that it is gentle for all ages to receive treatment, from children to seniors. Along with our chiropractic adjustments, we may recommend therapies such as ultrasound, electrical nerve stimulation and traction, and changes in diet, exercise and lifestyle so you can reap as many benefits as possible from our treatments.
Spinal Decompression:
You may know that you have spinal decompression if you feel stiffness or a lack of flexibility in the back or neck, wear to spinal joints, chronic pain, tingling, fatigue, or have the presence of herniated discs when we test you. Our spinal decompression therapy seeks to rehydrate degenerative discs in the back and fix the herniated disc and disc material back into their place. We do this with the help of computer technology and a machine to stretch the back and neck to release tension and intradiscal pressure at the level of the injured disk. Many of our patients notice a difference right away.
Cox Flexion Distraction and SpineForce Treatment:
As part of our chiropractic care, we also use Cox Flexion Distraction and SpineForce to apply pressure and movement to areas of the body and release tension. With flexion distraction, the bones in your spine (vertebrae) are stretched, pulling a disc gently back into place to relieve nerve pressure and pain. Once properly aligned, the spine can begin healing the area around the disc. We often combine Class IV laser therapy with Cox Flexion Distraction as well as SpineForce treatment. SpineForce is a training and rehabilitative device builds strength, balance and equilibrium in a patient’s body. The device has a unique training and performance environment designed to force different sensory systems in the body to interact in order to improve coordination and prevent structural disorders as well. You can learn more about both of these treatments by calling our office.
Studies have shown that spinal alignment therapy and chiropractic care are some of the most effective drug-free and non-invasive methods of reducing back pain naturally and powerfully. The ACA reports that research has found evidence that these methods are “just as effective as prescription NSAIDS combined with exercise.” How powerful is that?
