Numbness and Tingling? The Common Signs of Neuropathy
May 20, 2021The second Monday in May serves as National Women’s Checkup Day. This day focuses on the importance of regular routine checkups for women. If you have been in pain recently, a checkup with us could be beneficial to you. At Texas Spine and Sports Therapy Center, we can help you eliminate your pain and get you back to participating in all of your favorite sports and activities.
National Women’s Checkup Day
In May, National Women’s Checkup Day is observed to remind women that they can potentially find health problems before they occur. This day is a reminder for women that prioritizing your health could add years to your life. HealthyWomen.org explains that National Women’s Checkup Day was created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to remind women to take care of themselves by scheduling appointments with their healthcare providers during May as part of National Women’s Health week. This year, our team at Texas Spine and Sports Therapy Clinic is here to explain how we’re here: the women of the Austin, Texas area.
Common Sports Injuries in Women
Unfortunately a risk of physical activity and competitive sports is suffering an injury. Harvard Health explains that the most common injuries among female athletes are:
- Ankle sprain. This is the most common sports injury in both men and women, however, it’s particularly common among women.
- Shoulder pain. Women are prone to suffering rotator cuff problems like tendon inflammation or tendinitis, and instability.
- Knee injuries. The most common knee injuries women experience are irritation under the kneecap, also known as patellofemoral syndrome and ligament damage — which is especially common among soccer and basketball players.
- Stress fractures. Especially located in the foot or lower leg (tibia) among women who have “female athlete triad”. This triad is a combination of inadequate calorie and nutrient intake, irregular menstrual periods, and bone loss. Eating disorders can contribute to this triad.
- Plantar fasciitis. Abnormal alignment of the foot and flat feet may contribute to these small tears in the supporting tissues along the arch and heel.
Heal from Sports Injuries with Texas Spine and Sports Therapy Center
At Texas Spine and Sports Clinic, we have a team of professionals that can offer a wide array of care to patients right here in the Texas Hill Country. In one convenient, comfortable office, our team can help you with a variety of problems. If you have one of the common sports injuries mentioned above, here is how our team can help you:
Ankle Sprain
When it comes to ankle sprains, ice and rest can typically help with most of the pain. However, it’s always important to have an ankle sprain inspected by a medical professional to make sure future problems don’t arise. For foot pain, we will:
- Perform a sports injury assessment to help you get back on your feet as soon as possible.
- Advice on ways to protect your feet with orthopedic inserts and better exercise habits.
- Deep tissue massage that can relieve stress while reducing pain.
- Vibration therapy to encourage fractures deep in the foot or ankle to heal.
Shoulder Pain
With shoulder pain it can be hard to use your upper body at all for daily tasks. Depending on the severity of the injury and the source of the pain, we could offer treatments like postural therapy, massage therapy, electrical stimulation, chiropractic care, and further in-depth testing if needed to get to the exact cause of the pain.
Knee Injuries
Pain is a sign of damage. If you have knee pain that just won’t go away, take care of yourself by getting to the source of the problem. Depending on the cause and pain, we can treat knee pain by:
- Scheduled rest so your knee can heal.
- Soft massage to reduce tenderness and increase blood flow.
- Guided movements and calibrated stretching that relieves muscle stiffness.
- Joint injections to eliminate inflammation for months at a time.
- Recommendations for supplements that can improve joint health.
Plantar Fasciitis
The feet support the body and it’s important to keep them healthy. To treat plantar fasciitis, we have options like:
- Gentle guided stretching to show you how to relieve tightness in the band.
- Custom inserts for your shoes for better arch support.
- Chiropractic adjustments.
Stress Fractures
If you don’t treat stress fractures caused by a sports injury or condition like osteoporosis, you could risk further bone loss in the future. We offer treatments to make sure that the progression of the fracture is halted. Further, we will recommend ways you can increase bone density and make sure that you don’t have any nutritional deficiencies that could contribute to fragile bones.
