Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy is the latest breakthrough therapy for chronic back pain. Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy is medically proven to be safe and gentle and succeeds where previous, conventional therapies have failed. This therapy is a type of motorized traction used to help alleviate back pain. The goal of this therapy is to take pressure off the spinal discs by generating negative pressure on the disc. We have many highly-satisfied patients that come into our office with pain and leave feeling incredibly better. Come see what spinal decompression therapy can do for you today!
What Is Spinal Decompression?
Spinal decompression gently stretches your spine, altering its position and the corresponding pressure that has been built up. This pressure is usually located in compressed discs in the back and the 24 vertebrae that make up the back’s support and structural system. Many patients who have already tried surgery or medications to relieve their back pain report experiencing more pain relief with spinal decompression therapy.
By gently stretching and moving the spine, we are able to realign vertebrae that have become misaligned, which can compress nerves and discs and lead to swelling, pain, neuropathy symptoms and more. With normal alignment restored, patients can generally expect to have more range-of-motion, decreased (or eliminated) pain, and more mobility and function.
What More Can You Tell Me?
We perform spinal decompression therapy using a machine. We will strap you to the machine with a harness that helps position your back for optimal decompression. Slowly, we will stretch and lengthen your spine. This stretching will help decrease pressure on your back. Patients who are new to treatment will experience some discomfort, but that discomfort is only for a short time.
Each session is about 30 minutes and most patients schedule 20-25 sessions in a 4-6 week time period to properly heal. The stretching and repositioning of your spine is different than normal physical therapy and manipulation treatments. Because it is is a slow and gradual process, your body won’t “lock down” as a natural reaction to prevent injury. It will simply stretch and slowly relieve pressure as it should.
Why Is It Needed?
Back pain is one of the main reasons patients need spinal decompression therapy. Back pain can be a debilitating condition that can stop you from living a normal and functional life. For many people, it’s not a simple ache that they can walk off or one that goes away on its own. Back pain is reoccurring in many patients and can be caused by a number of factors. Some of these include herniated or bulging discs, a pinched nerve, spinal stenosis, sciatica pain (caused by a compressed nerve), degenerative disc disease and surgery.
Arthritis Pain
Degenerative disc disease is known by it’s more common name of arthritis and has to deal with pain in the joints. There are many joints of the back that can experience pain, especially around the spinal discs. When pressure is removed from your spinal discs, bulging or herniated discs withdraw. This removes pressure off nerves and other spinal structures. By removing the pressure on your discs, non-surgical spinal decompression therapy restores movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the discs so they can heal. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that more than 54 million Americans have arthritis pain. We can help alleviate this pain in the back joints with spinal decompression therapy.
Shocking Statistics
The amount of people suffering from back pain is incredible. The numbers may shock you:
- Studies show that around 31 million Americans experience low-back pain at any given time. That’s only counting people in the United States!
- ½ of all working Americans admit to experiencing back pain while on the job.
- An estimated 54.4 million Americans suffer from arthritis pain. That equates to about 22.7% of people, many of which have pain in the back or their knee, elbow and wrist joints.
- Back pain in working Americans leads to more missed days at work, decreased wages, and less productivity. This back pain costs Americans about $100 billion dollars a year, as estimated by the UNC School of Medicine.
- Problems stemming from chronic pain itself in the United States costs patients about $635 billion a year.
How Can I Receive Therapy?
As you can see, millions are suffering from back pain in the United States. If you are one of those people, your pain does not have to be a way of life. We always recommend seeking natural non-invasive solutions before turning to surgery as a way to heal. If you are experiencing severe back and neck pain, spinal decompression therapy may be able to help you. We especially welcome patients that are suffering from a spine or disc injury.
