By the Numbers
According to the CDC, 54.4 million American adults were diagnosed with some form of arthritis each year between 2013-2015. People as young as 18 can have arthritis and the CDC estimates that by 2040, 78 million adults in the United States will have arthritis. That’s roughly about half of adults that will experience problems with this condition sometime in their life. Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common forms of this condition, and is sometimes referred to as degenerative joint disease. Some causes include: athletic activity that strains the joints, repetitive activity, obesity, diabetes, hereditary degenerative joint conditions, multiple surgeries in one area of the body and injuries from activity. With arthritis being so chronic and far-reaching, there are many ways we have found to combat its symptoms.
Symptoms
If you suffer from any type of arthritis, then you surely are familiar with some of the common symptoms it causes. Stiffness and pain in an affected joint is one of the most common signs of arthritis. Tenderness and redness in the joints and even visible swelling can occur. You may be fine one day, and then develop a sudden onset of stiffening within a few days or weeks that could be caused by arthritis. Another visible sign will be a hard nodule that grows under the skin around a joint (such as the knee or wrist). Arthritis can cause fatigue and chronic pain as well, which can be worsened by cold weather or physical activity (even walking).
What You Can Do
What’s a person to do about the pain and symptoms? Suffer the rest of their lives? Not at all! Millions of Americans suffer from arthritis pain and symptoms needlessly, as there are many treatments proven to help relieve the burden arthritis can have on daily life. Without treatment, your condition can become worse over time and lead to the loss of shape or movement in a joint as well as stiffness that makes it hard to perform movements (such as with the hands). Neuropathic symptoms such as numbness, tingling and sensitivity to touch can also occur. To combat your arthritis, we have several treatments that have proven effective in relieving even the worst arthritis symptoms.
- Joint Injections – Our arthritis patients love these! We provide anti-inflammatory joint injections directly to the site of your joint irritation to provide localized pain relief that is rapid and long lasting. Our injections work to diminish inflammation, giving you a restored ability to move more freely and have a greater range of motion. This injection combats arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis pain for weeks with very few side effects, if any.
- Massage Therapy – Deep tissue massages can help find trigger points in the body (or areas of intense pressure usually in the form of a muscle knot) and relieve them. Relieving areas of tension in the body can relieve pain the natural way and find areas of the body that are especially prone to problems.
- Chiropractic Adjustments – With our chiropractic care, we specialize in Active Release Technique (ART), which is a chiropractic method meant to break down scar tissue around damaged joints and soft tissues to free up your range of motion. We seek to restore natural alignment to the spine by gentle forceful pressure to joints, decompressing nerves and discs as well as built-up tension in the body.
- Exercise Programs – The best way to keep muscles and bones strong is to exercise them. If you’re in pain, the last thing you want to do is move though. We have customized exercise and physical therapy programs to continually strengthen your musculoskeletal system in a way that’s healthy for your body and will promote muscle building instead of inflammation and damage.
