Are You Suffering from Whiplash?
July 29, 2026Non Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy is one of our most prescribed treatments, because it’s effective in treating lower back pain. Spinal Decompression relieves the compression within discs and vertebrae that cause neck and back pain. We use the most advanced decompression table in the industry, which ultimately relieves your spine and discs from excess pressure.
Spinal Decompression Therapy at Texas Spine & Sports Therapy Center is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that provides long term pain relief and restores you to your natural health.
What Is Spinal Decompression Therapy?
Spinal Decompression Therapy is a motorized traction therapy that stretches the spine over a period of 4 to 6 weeks or more, depending on your individual needs. Back pain can be a crippling condition that prevents you from living a functional, normal life. Back injuries stem from a variety of conditions which include the following issues:
- Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)
- Herniated or bulging discs
- Injured or diseased spinal nerve roots
- Pinched Nerve
- Post-Surgical Pain
- Sciatica (lower back, hip, and leg pain)
- Spinal Stenosis
- Worn spinal facet joints
By slowly and gently expanding the spine, Spinal Decompression relieves the pressure within vertebrae and compressed discs. This change takes pressure off the spinal disks, which are gel-like cushions between the bones in your spine, by creating negative pressure in the disk. As a result, bulging or herniated disks retract, taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine. This in turn, helps promote movement of nutrient-rich fluids, water and oxygen into the disks so they can heal.
What Should I Expect During Spinal Decompression?
You are fully clothed during spinal decompression therapy. Depending on your diagnosis, you will either lie face down or face up on a computer-controlled table during your session. Your chiropractor operates the computer, customizing treatment to your specific needs.
Before the procedure begins, your chiropractor will strap you to the machine with a harness around your pelvis and another harness around your trunk. These are set to position your back for optimal decompression. You will feel a gradual elongation of your spine as the discs are relieved of excess pressure. Some patients report some minimal discomfort during the first couple of sessions. However, the pain subsides when they become acclimated to the treatment.
Each session lasts approximately 30 – 45 minutes, with no downtime or additional medication needed. Most patients require 20 to 25 sessions scheduled over 4 to 6 weeks to be properly treated, although the frequency of the prescribed therapy is tailor made for your individual condition. Some patients require less due to the lack of severity of their symptoms, while other patients require more treatment due to the severity of their disorder.
- Before or after therapy, you may have other types of treatment, such as:
- Electrical stimulation (electric current that causes certain muscles to contract)
- Ultrasound (the use of sound waves to generate heat and promote healing)
- Heat or cold therapy
- Targeted Relief for Muscle and Joint Pain
Who Should not Have Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression?
Ask your doctor whether you are a good candidate for nonsurgical spinal decompression. Those with the following conditions will not be considered:
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm
- Advanced osteoporosis
- Metal implants in the spine
- Pregnancy
- Spinal tumors or fractures
How Does Spinal Decompression Work?
At Texas Spine & Sports Therapy Center, we use the state of the art DRX 9000 Spinal Decompression System. It is built with computerized sensors that measure and monitor your body’s response. This helps calibrate the force being applied to your spine. When the system senses the tensing of your muscles, the force being used is automatically adjusted to a more gentle level to induce muscle relaxation while allowing decompression treatment to continue more effectively.
Physical therapy, traction and traditional manipulation can reduce disc pressure, but it cannot achieve negative pressure, which may be needed to correct the condition of your spine. The re-positioning and stretching of your spine is slow and gradual, so your body won’t stiffen or “lock down” your back muscles in response to treatment. This is important because the “lock down” response is your body’s natural reaction to prevent injury when pressure is being applied to your spine. This can be a drawback when the spine is misaligned or injured, because this natural response will cause resistance to corrective treatment. Fortunately, Spinal Decompression gently bypasses this protective reflex, relieving your spine and discs from excess pressure.
What Are the Benefits of Spinal Decompression Treatment?
Non-surgical spinal decompression has a reported clinical success rate ranging between 71 percent and 89 percent for relieving pain and improving function in patients with herniated or bulging discs. Some users report major relief. The side effects are minimal following this treatment. The most common adverse reaction to treatment is a mild, dull ache for a day or two as the body adjusts to being stretched and decompressed.
