What is a healthy lifestyle?
A “healthy” lifestyle consists of a balanced diet and regular exercise, but did you know that mental health plays a big part in how healthy we are too? Stress management is just as important for our bodies to function optimally, as it can affect us physically and emotionally.
10 Ways to Live Healthier in 2022
1. Exercise each day with something you enjoy doing
Everyone has an activity that brings them joy or eases their stress. Whether it’s playing with the dog, dancing to music, or going on a walk with your family – do this thing every day! Make sure you are creating healthy habits so they become part of your daily routine. This is how you’ll feel the most in control of your life. Once these activities are part of your daily routine, you will begin to enjoy them even more!
2. Get motivated with others
Cultivating relationships with people who encourage us, share our values, and make us laugh is crucial for our mental health. Don’t shy away from finding an accountability partner that can help motivate you and push you towards your health goals.
3. Breathe mindfully to reduce stress levels
When we are stressed, our bodies prepare for danger by releasing chemicals that set us into “fight-or-flight” mode, and this can be harmful to our health. Studies show that those who practice mindfulness techniques such as yoga and meditation have much lower stress levels than those who don’t practice these techniques. A good way to be healthier in 2022 is to focus on your breathing through exercises like yoga.
4. Know what you’re putting in your body
Did you know that eating whole, healthy foods has been proven to protect against heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions? This simply means: eat lots of veggies, fruit, unprocessed meat and dairy, and whole grains. Make sure to put your fork down between bites (yes, it helps!) and try slowly chewing your food instead of scarfing it down. This is not only good manners but also good for your digestion, which will make you feel more energized.
5. Drink more water each day
It’s easy to get dehydrated by how busy we are. Studies show that those who drink 8 glasses of water a day have lower stress levels and more energy than those who don’t drink as much.
6. Limit screen time each day
If you feel like you’re constantly checking your phone or watching TV to relax, then it might be time to change up your routine. Studies show that people who spend too much time on their phones and TVs have a higher rate of depression and anxiety and also are more sedentary. Instead, try taking a walk with your family after dinner to wind down from the day or spending time journaling each night before bed.
7. Enjoy a relaxing activity each day
Whether it’s hopping in a hot bath or enjoying some alone time with a book, find something that helps you relax every day. Studies show that people who don’t take time to slow down and relax actually have lower self-esteem and are less motivated for their health goals. Make sure to take time for yourself each day, since you only get one body and one life.
8. Choose the stairs
Having trouble fitting in your exercise routine? Don’t give up! Exercise doesn’t have to take hours out of your day. Try taking the stairs instead of an elevator or parking from your destination a little further away to get some extra steps in. The more you move, the healthier your body will be.
9. Include your family in your health goals
By involving those you love, you can encourage each other to be healthier. This will give you all the motivation and support you need as a family unit! Studies show that those who have support from friends and family are much more likely to reach their goal weight or stay at a healthy weight.
10. Schedule your meals ahead of time
It’s very easy to get caught up in life and forget to eat or choose fast food because it’s quick and easy. However, studies show that people who plan their meals are less likely to experience unhealthy weight issues than those who don’t schedule their meals ahead of time. Scheduling your meals each day will also help you feel more organized and give you a jumpstart on all the cooking you’ll be doing in 2022!
